Here Is Your Screen News – Dec 28 – Jan 10

TV News

Studios have released premiere dates for their returning shows. Game of Thrones, Silicon Valley and Veep will all return on April 12th for HBO. Bates Motel and new series The Returned will premiere on March 9th on A & E.

The new comedy starring Tim Robbins and Jack Black, The Brink will debut sometime next summer on HBO. Cinemax stated that Strike Back will also return in the summer, while their other show The Knick will premiere in the fall.

Networks have busy renewing shows recently. HBO renewed Girls for a 5th season and Real Time with Bill Maher for seasons 14 and 15. FOX renewed Bob’s Burgers for season six. Showtime also renewed Inside Comedy for a fouth season. Marco Polo has also won a second season renewal from Netflix.

Networks have also been cancelling shows. Covert Affairs has been axed by USA Network after five seasons on the air. Comedy Central have cancelled the animated comedy Brickleberry after three seasons. The After, the new Chris Carter series (The X-Files), which was picked up by Amazon for a full season early last year, was cancelled before production started on the series.

New shows have premiered since the start of the new year such as Galavant (ABC), Agent Carter (ABC), Empire (FOX) and Hindsight (VH1). Many shows have returned aswell. Cougar Town (TBS), Pretty Little Liars (ABC), Switched at Birth (ABC Family), American Horror Story (FX), Archer (FX), Portlandia (IFC), Hart of Dixie (The CW), Glee (FOX), Banshee (Cinemax) and American Idol (FOX).

Syfy are developing a show titled ‘Hackers’ which will be a non-scripted series exploring the world of hackers in the real world. Syfy released a statement. “Hackers will reveal the secrets behind the most infamous cyber-crimes ever committed, using sophisticated, never-before-seen digital graphics to create an experiential “hacking” scene that exposes what actually happens when a computer network is broken into – including what goes on inside the mind of the hacker.”

Actor Edward Herrmann, who played the father of the “Gilmore Girls” and as the head vampire Max in Joel Schumacher’s 1987 vampire classic The Lost Boys, has passed away at the age of 71 due to complications from his previously-diagnosed brain cancer, according to his manager (via BuzzFeed News). Herrmann is survived by three children from his two marriages.

Michael C. Hall and Wes Bentley are joining Robert Redford, Bryce Dallas Howard and Oakes Fegley as cast members in the upcoming project from Disney’s remake Pete’s Dragon about a young boy who is raised by a dragon named Elliot. The musical film was released in 1977, and Disney announced the they were taking on the project two years ago. Production is slated to start in New Zealand next month.
